Menopause can significantly affect women’s health and quality of life, yet its impact on economic outcomes – such as employment, income, and retirement security – remains largely unknown in Australia and worldwide. Australia lacked an integrated data resource capable of examining these relationships across health and administrative records. This evidence gap limits the ability of policymakers and employers to support women effectively through this life transition.
The project sought to create a foundation that would support the generation of stronger evidence that may help women, employers, health funds and superannuation funds.
Project Objectives
This project sought to establish means for examining variation in healthcare for women during the menopause transition by linking menopause-related data for over 120,000 women from the 45 and Up Study to Commonwealth administrative data on healthcare, wages, employment, retirement savings, and government income support.
By integrating longitudinal health, employment, and administrative data to create a secure data asset, this project aimed to enable exploration of how menopause affects different groups of women to identify and address disparities in experiences and outcomes.
