Opportunity

Australian hospitals increasingly have electronic medical records (EMRs) and digital systems that contain vast quantities of clinical data that could support real-time decision support capability. However, there are often face challenges associated with implementation, adoption and workflow integration these clinical decision support tools. The opportunity was to better understand how data and digital technologies impact patient care, healthcare efficiency and clinician experience in hospitals.

Project Objective

This project aimed to help clinical staff make better real time decisions when caring for patients. Working with Alcidion’s Miya Precision system, which consolidates data from existing records, and provides clinicians with proactive notifications of critical issues, the research team evaluated and optimised the implementation of decision support tools to augment the EMR system.

Final Outcomes

Key outcomes included:

Development of a stakeholder-informed governance framework for implementing clinical decision support systems.
Evidence-based recommendations for design and implementation of virtual care technologies.
Practical guidance to improve detection and management of clinical deterioration in virtual care settings.
Lessons learned, including barriers and facilitators, for implementing decision support systems in metropolitan and rural healthcare settings.
Economic models demonstrating potential benefits from remote monitoring-supported surgical pathways compared with conventional inpatient models, such as reduced hospital bed days and lower healthcare costs.

The project also supported the successful completion of PhD programs.

Impact and Benefits

The research demonstrates that digital health technologies can improve care delivery when supported by appropriate governance, implementation planning, stakeholder engagement and resourcing. Findings provide a practical evidence base for future deployment of clinical decision support technologies, virtual care services, remote patient monitoring and AI-enabled systems across Australian healthcare settings.
