Reducing diabetes management errors in Australia: A healthcare workforce educational platform

Project Participants

Status: Ongoing

Opportunity

Diabetes management is a complex field, requiring evolving knowledge and practices to reduce the risk of costly and irreversible complications. Despite the education required, diabetes continuing professional development (CPD) among Australia’s 1 million health workers is limited.

While there is a clear clinical need and market opportunity for a digital solution, designing and ensuring its uptake poses technical and commercial challenges. To tackle these issues, the Western Diabetes Education Program (WDEP), an existing online platform tailored for health workers to self-assess and attain competence in diabetes knowledge and practice, will be further developed for a fit-for-purpose solution.

Project Objective

To create a deployable commercial tool, our project aims to enhance the WDEP, addressing critical technical gaps in providing personalized content based on individual competencies as well as validating such methodologies in clinical settings.

By building a complete system and testing in a clinical trial, this initiative addresses the pressing need for an improved digital solution to bridge the educational gap. The improved WDEP toolkit will empower health workers with personalised learning experiences, ensuring more effective diabetes management. By validating its impact in real-world settings and preparing for broader implementation, this project aligns with the goal of enhancing health workers’ skills to prevent complications, ultimately benefiting both patients and the healthcare system.
